John Chatfield's interest in choral music was kindled at University
during hisundergraduate studies in Music Education. Singing in the
University Collegium Musicum gave him his first experiences of singing
much-loved sacred choral works by Bach, Handel, Durufle etc as well as
concerted works with University ensembles. Whilst at the University of
Western Australia he was also fortunate to sing in venues like the
Winthrop Hall. After graduating with a degree in music education, John's first teaching appointment was to Bunbury where again he was able to pursue his interest in choirs, this time through a children's chorus called The Bunbury Youth Chorale. This 'project' kept him busy for the next ten years, during which time he was also able to witness first-hand performances by world class choirs like the Toronto Children's Chorus and the Tapiola Choir from Finland. In 1995, John enrolled in a Master's degree in choral conducting at the University of Queensland and was able to complete this by mid 1996. Upon his return to Perth in 1996 John founded Voices in Praise and has continued ever since. Voice in Praise is a sacred choral ensemble for adults interested in pursuing a wide variety of sacred music from the Gospel and Spiritual traditions through plainchant, hymnody, psalm settings, contemporary styles of Christian music and of course much loved classics by composers such as Mozart, Handel, Haydn and Bach. |
